From Insight to Foresight: How to Turn Data into a Strategic Asset

In today's data-rich environment, insurers have access to a wealth of valuable information that, when effectively harnessed, can transform them from data collectors into strategic decision-makers.

The objective is twofold: transform data insights into valuable foresight that help guide business strategies and monetise data by offering data-centric services and products to policyholders and other customers. However, achieving this goal requires a clear plan and vision. In part three of our actuarial and finance modernisation series, we offer a roadmap to help you unlock the strategic potential of your organisation’s data. 

Step 1: Define your data vision

Catalogue all potential data use cases, taking into account granularity, frequency, quality, timing and GDPR compliance. Also, ensure there’s alignment across front, middle and back offices before you dive into solutions.

 

Step 2: Establish your data landscape

Design a data architecture that aligns with your requirements, whether it's a data warehouse, data lake, data lakehouse, data fabric or data mesh.

Be mindful of cloud solutions and services, and consider whether to build or buy components of your data landscape. Also, don’t forget to devise an integration strategy with your existing systems and processes.


Step 3: Determine data integration and delivery

Ensure that data seamlessly flows across your organisation, including internal and external sources. Prioritise data curation practices to maintain quality and reliability, establishing clear processes for data cleansing, validation and enrichment.

You should develop robust data pipelines to enable real-time, on-demand data delivery. Also, remember that self-service access empowers teams to utilise data whenever and wherever they need it, helping you foster a culture of data-driven decision-making.


Step 4: Balance data ownership and infrastructure

Decentralised ownership promotes innovation and adaptability, while centralised infrastructure ensures data consistency, reliability and quality. Striking this equilibrium supports data-driven innovation while preserving data reliability.


Step 5: Select a data modelling suite and visualisation tools

You should leverage advanced technologies like machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to extract deeper insights from data. Make sure to choose data visualisation tools that make complex data more understandable to all stakeholders, facilitating faster and more informed decision-making.


Step 6: Data governance for consistency and quality

Untitled design (45)Establish a robust data governance framework encompassing data capture, validation, secure storage, protection and systematic delivery. Maintaining comprehensive data lineage and auditing practices is crucial for transparency, traceability and enhanced data management.


Step 7: Adopting a people-centric approach for a data-driven culture

Untitled design (46)Foster a data-driven culture by equipping your workforce with the skills and mindset to harness data effectively. You need to instil a collective belief in data's value as a strategic asset and empower employees to leverage data in daily tasks and decision-making.
