How should businesses help the national interest?

"Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country." John F. Kennedy

This famous quote from the late great US President rallied the American people behind him in challenging political times. But these same words ring true in modern-day Britain. For businesses at this juncture in our economic and social journey, where the country is still suffering from the consequences and impacts of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, adding to our many financial challenges, businesses should be saying:

"Ask not what your government can do for your business - ask what your business can do for your country."


How can businesses make a difference to support society through the next five to ten years?  

We can leverage our innate hard-working spirit, entrepreneurial flair, capacity to take risks, ability to grow our businesses, and willingness to roll up our sleeves and get the job done. And, crucially, we can generate the vital tax revenues needed for our government to tackle the country's most pressing needs.

So, what does this actually mean? Businesses must focus on how they can be more efficient and effective, provide more jobs, protect the jobs they already provide, take measured risks, manage challenges to achieve intended outcomes, reduce waste and address climate issues. And we must be willing to pay our dues. This is not time to be selfish. It's time to come together and build a better future in which we harness all the positive attributes that we have available to us.
