Good Governance: Where do you start? And what next…?

If you’ve read all our previous blogs on Governance perspectives you’ll already know that here at Brighter we can help you to make things better. If, then, you’ve decided it’s time to take action, where do you start? Here we look at how you can begin the process of getting better.

Making a decision to change

The process of making things better begins with a decision to do something about it. If you’ve decided that now is a good time for your organisation to consider how it should move forward into a brighter future, how you want it to develop and evolve, or how it reacts to new challenges, well done – it takes character and bravery to take the first step.

One thing is for certain, procrastination isn’t going to improve your bottom line, enhance your employer brand, or bring on board the brightest and the best new talent. Putting things off can only lead to you losing this pivotal moment in time for your business to push in the right direction.

The stages of change

Change will be a challenge as well as an opportunity but it’s an important part of your business development and can help your organisation:

  • Grow the business
  • Increase profits
  • Improve processes
  • Maximise the skills and experiences of your workforce
  • Adjust and optimise your strategy.

Change can be adaptive – making small, gradual changes to help develop new products or update current ones – or transformational – large, complex changes that enable organisations to move from a current strategy to a new one.

The process of change

So you’re galvanised about the process of change? Enthused? Ready? What’s next?

The first step is to choose your Champion for Change. Someone who’s going to take the lead, set the process in motion and see it through to the end.

The person responsible will oversee several stages:

  • Defining the change – acknowledging and understanding why the organisation has to change. Seeing how to approach it, through planning and analysis. Sharing the idea(s) to encourage insight and contributions
  • Describing the impact – what is the likely result? What effect will it have on processes, jobs, behaviours, performance, and profits?
  • Developing communications – sharing the change process with all your stakeholders, allowing employees to prepare, and detailing the timescale
  • Deploying resources – offering additional resources or training to employees who will be affected. Some may need more support during the process.
  • Monitoring the change – documenting and measuring the impact of change throughout the process
  • Analysing the results – what strategies and actions were most effective? Documenting the process can assist in future changes, and can help employees continue with the new reality.

At Brighter, we can help you navigate the challenges of making things better. We will work with you, in collaboration and partnership, to make sure that you do get a better process that will lead to better outcomes.
